STRATEGIC EVALUATION OF ASTURIAN MINING LANDSCAPE
The European Spatial Development Perspective (ESDP), released in Potsdam in 1999, considers the landscape as one of the main elements of territorial development. Likewise, its balanced and sustainable management is regarded as one of the main priorities for developing the European Union Territory, in a double challenge, that of its conservation and that of its proactive management. From this perspective, the Cultural Landscape Research Group of the Polytechnic University of Madrid proposes a research project about a relevant component of its landscape to the Dirección General de Minería y Energía del Principado de Asturias.
This study is envisioned as a basis for future planning and management actions. It aims to stress the necessity of integrating landscape complexities and attributes into planning and territorial development. Territorial management policies should consider cultural landscapes and incorporate them for future study and discussion.
