The echoes (ECOS) are the memories of a powerful voice that endures in memory and returns.
In October 2024, the coal-mining valleys of Asturias hosted the first edition of ECOS - Architecture, Culture and Territory Festival, aimed to be precisely an echo of the impressive heritage of the region. To this end, the public was invited to visit sites sharing architectural, historical, cultural or social features, linked by the common theme of the Coal Mining Heritage, across the territory. At each of the sites, an ephemeral architectural installation was erected in close relation to a prominent heritage element.
Alongside the installations, a programme of events and participatory activities contributed to temporarily activating the selected sites. The combined action of installations and programme fostered the interconnection between inherited memories and envisioned futures.
ECOS is planned as a long-term initiative that aspires to be an exemplary model for the recovery and promotion of the cultural dimension of the territory. Its conceptual and organizational structure are defined around its three main conceptual categories:
Architecture. The festival illustrates the capacity of architecture as a vehicle for cultural expression. It does so through the creation of ephemeral architectural installations in selected locations with high heritage value. Renowned creative teams with both an international background and local roots are invited to design each of the installations.
Culture. It incorporates the architectural dimension into the existing cultural network, reinforcing and enhancing it. In addition, it addresses social and environmental challenges, and connects with younger generations by supplementing the installations with a programme of events, participatory activities, guided tours and school visits.
Territory. The organization of an Architecture Festival within the Asturian territory is distinguished by its locations of great scenic value, differentiating itself from other initiatives of a similar format in urban settings. The Asturian landscape constitutes an exceptional background, becoming the main stage where the installations are integrated, the events take place and the activities are developed.
